Hawaii by James Michener - A wonderful work of historical fiction traces the history of Hawaii beginning with the first inhabitants from Tahiti, Haviki and Bora Bora running through the end of World War II. Michener's Hawaii is very compelling, weaving family histories through out the book and will hold you captive through all 900+pages.
Hana Highway Mile by Mile- Originally an excerpt from the Maui Mile by Mile guidebook, this full color guidebook is the most comprehensive guide available for the Hana, South Hana, Pi‘ilani, and Kula Highways on eastern Maui. It has been updated twice (2007/2008) since the publication date of the Maui Mile by Mile guidebook. It contains seven detailed color maps, and includes nearly 70 featured stops. It is available in both eBook and paperback format.

Maui Mile by Mile - A new series of guides that have a very simple, but good, layout (one place, beach, etc per page). Reads more like a true guide than a book and has a photo for every stop in the book (color only in eBook form). For Maui their guide details the three main drives of the island (most of the sights are on them) and the must see and do of the island not include on those drives. Unfortunately it doesn't cover ALL of the island. The maps in their book are good. As noted above, a new edition of the Hana Highway chapter has been published as a stand-alone guidebook.

Moon Handbooks Maui - A very detailed guidebook similar in format to the revealed series. Covers most places around the entire island, and has good maps. Select photos in color, though most of the guide is black and white. Organization is good and includes a variety of reviews on accommodations, services, entertainment, and food.

Frommer's Maui 2008 - The best WRITTEN of all the books, but the most wordy. Very detailed, but it's A LOT of text. If you like details, get this guide, if you like photos get mile by mile or revealed or trailblazer. Overall Frommer's is a great series, but hopefully they eventually include more photos. Photos are mostly black and white in their guides.
