I have visited Hawaii many times but always stayed at a Sheraton, Hilton or Hyatt mega-resort Hotel. This trip was very spur-of-the-moment, so I went on-line to look for a great hotel rate. It was there that I found the Aqua Coconut that had a $115 per night AAA rate. I called the hotel directly to get more information and based on the ammenities they described, I booked over the phone. The Aqua Coconut is three blocks from the beach overlooking the Ala Wai Canal and on the same street as the Sheraton Waikiki, Roys and all the shopping of Kalakaua Avenue. It reminded me of a newly rennovated "South Beach-type" boutique hotel. The lobby is modern with a well-designed minimalist theme using white, aqua blue and accents of bright orange and lime green. Very retro looking and chic. Two computers are available for use in the lobby and printing is complimentary. A continential breakfast is served each morning and consists of cereal, fruit, juice, coffee and assorted pasteries. The rooms are small (I was glad that I was alone) but beautifully decorated in the same retro colors that were used in the lobby. All rooms have a large flat-screen television with all the cable channels, a refrigerator, microwave and wet bar with glasses, plates and utensils. One of the best features was the bed. The mattress and pillows were very comfortable and covered with a down comforter. The air-conditioner was a window unit that worked well for half of the room. The bathroom didn't have a tub but a nice shower. Ice machines are on every other floor that are serviced by two elevators. The fitness center is small, having about four various types of cardio equipment, free weights and floor mats but it is open 24 hours per day. They also have a small pool. Valet parking is the only way to park at the Coconut and the staff is very efficient in having your car ready to pick up after you request it by calling from your room. Perhaps the best thing about the Coconut is the staff. Because it's a small hotel, the staff knows your name, greets you when you come in after a long day of activities and offers to assist you in any way that they can. For the price, and wonderful service, I would definitely stay at this hotel again.
