I stayed at Crane Ridge from 03/08/08-03/11/08 and had an amazing time. I flew on my own to see my boyfriend and friends and after many weeks of deciding where I wanted to stay that was reasonable, peaceful, still in the city and close to the beach this was the perfect resort. I read through many reviews so I will try to keep mine detailed so you can get honest feedback about this property.
Crane Ridge is more like apartment living, but with beauty that surrounds the property and the quietness you really need to fully relax. There are not many units and all units are spaced apart so you get full privacy when you are in your unit. I stayed more towards the back of the property and arriving a night I have to admit I was a bit weary. The property is up on a mountain top so it is a bit darker and more secluded than the beach properties. When I woke up that morning I was in total heaven. It was a little cooler being higher up in the mountains but the scenery was "BREATHTAKING". The resort was super clean and the landscaping was beautiful. I had full view of the tennis court behind me, the city to the rightof me and the ocean view from the balcony. **Again that was being in the back of the property.** We saw several cruise ships come and go and there was never a lot of noise on property.
The staff was super friendly and my check in was super quick. I checked in within 5 minutes and off to the room I went. There is a $20.00 deposit to use the phone but there was no deposit for the room itself. When I arrived, I had booked the one bedroom suite but they upgraded me at no charge to the two bedroom suite. OMG OMG OMG.... the room is amazing. It is as big as a two bedroom apt here in Texas. There was a spiral stairway taking you to the attic level where the master bedroom is. There are huge closets that could sleep 2(just example of how big it really is) with dressers in them and a jaquzzi tub. The down stairs had a nice size bathroom, a double bed, two twin beds and a kitchenette. There is not a stove or microvwave and all dishes and silverware come in sets of 4. There is a fridge and it worked really well. There was also a can opener. There was a safe in my room to put my personal belongings and two air conditioners (one upstairs and one downstairs). I will have to admit it doesn't cool quickly but in the morning or evening open up the french windows, doors and shutters and it really does cool the place quickly. We at that point turned the air conditioner off and were fine the rest of the stay. All the floors are tile except for the master bedroom upstairs which is wooden. We could not find the remote to the TV but we never complained as we got up to change the channel if we were watching tv. Reminder.. You are going on vacation, other than a weather check, who should be watching TV when there are beaches, rivers, etc.
We went to the supermarket which is about a 3 minute drive to get our food and it was really reasonable. But if you are looking to eat out then there to the left of the resort when you go out the gate is the Ruins Restauraunt and well as Evita Italian food. At night if you are by the pool and it is quiet you can hear the waterfall at Ruins and it is very relaxing.
The Pool:
They just renovated the Pool bar and it is very spacious, lit up and nice. You can enter from the front or swim up in the pool. The pool is a good size and you can play volleyball. It was warm enough in March to swim in it day or night. For we swam at night. The hot tub was SUPER hot. We actually went upstairs and got in the jaquzzi tub instead because we could control the temperature. The second day the hot tub did cool off.
Just a little bad, but not bad enough to complain:
The jaquzzi tub leaked down onto the first floor of the hotel when it was draining and the door handle came off of the balcony french door. We called the office and it was being worked on in no time. Maid service comes later in the day, but she was super sweet. She washed all of our dishes, brought new towels, etc.
So the good:
ALL... Every place is going to have down side regardless of where you stay in Ocho Rios or any hotel any where for that matter. This place could you minor renovations but it really is minimal and not bothersome at all. The staff is super friendly and very attentive so they will be there for you whenever you need them.
The pool and hot tub are great. The free breakfast in the morning isn't much but it is FREE! You can also buy breakfast, lunch and dinner there for a fee, but try the FREE first.. If it is not enough then order something.
Close to EVERYTHING. My boyfriend and walked about 4 miles and basically walked the city. There are many places to eat... again right to the left of the property from the street is Ruins, and Evitas. In front of the property Oceans 11, Margaritaville, and Hard Rock, to the right is a Jerk mom and pop shop that is really good. There is a shell gas station for quick items about a block away and the supermarket is about a 3 minute drive.
Make sure to meet and greet the husband and wife selling sugar cane on the hill in the back. They are the sweetest people you will ever meet. I am sure they live on property so you will m make some immediate friends.
Other places walking distance and/or very close are:
Taj Mahal and Island Village for shopping, hair cuts, etc.
I promise you it is worth every penny that you will spend there and they are truly affordable for what you get.
