Just stayed in Sandal's Negril for our honeymoon last month. Everyone asks how it was, and the best way to explain it was that we had fun, but probably won't go back.
First, let me say that we didn't meet one person that wasn't nice to us. The staff was very friendly, and the locals were nice too. There was a lot to do on the resort and excursions were easily booked, although pretty expensive. The bartenders were pretty quick with drinks and the snorkel guys were great. We also had our bed turned down every night (unless it rained).
The food was pretty good as resorts go. The beach grill was our favorite. The chef was a great guy. The Kimono's was very fun. But there's no way that was tiger shrimp.
Ok, you may be thinking, "sounds great, why wouldn't you go back?" Here's why.
"Smoke?" "Party?" "Ganga?" "Marijuana?" This is what we heard about every fifteen minutes or so from the locals as they walked on the beach through the resort followed by security. I know it's Jamaica, and I should expect it, but believe me, it gets tiring. Also, the guys renting ski do's are VERY persistant. Don't even acknowledge them unless you are interested or they will hound you. There are picture takers wandering around that property that have no problem approaching you at any time anywhere. Again, nice but it gets tiring after a while.
We went on a couple of excursions that were nice, not great. I think that the first word every Jamaican learns is "Tip?" Again, I know it's Jamaica, and I should expect it, but do I really need to pay someone two dollars for helping me up a ladder? $20 for jumping off a cliff? $10 for dancing on a boat trip I just paid $118 for? $5 for getting my suitcase off the bus? and on and on... Also, bring small bills. No one in Jamaica has change. That $3 beer you just drank may cost you $10.
And finally, and this is just plain old jealousy on my part, everyone else we talked to seemed to get a free upgrade. Talking to other couples we learned that complaining about something, anything, about your room may get you an instant upgrade. ie: room not quite ready, key requires jiggling, shower not strong enough, noisey air conditioner. One couple even got upgraded to a butler's suite, and didn't even really know how it happened. We even had to pay $8 if we wanted to open the bag of nuts in our room.
So, to sum it up, nice place, nice people, it's just that I felt more hassled than when in Mexico.
