I took my girlfriend for a two week vacation to Sandals Negril and there are a number of differing reviews on here so I thought I'd put my opinion accross from a non-honeymoon/wedding perspective.
The airport - be prepared to queue, we took nearly two hours to get through to baggage collection.
The bus ride - no complaints, a/c worked and the driver was friendly and informative. Jamaican driving gets a lot of bad press but thats how they do it so sit back and enjoy the ocean views as you're taken along the coast road.
Check in - again the source of a few complaints, you get cold towels and rum punch and you may have to wait a few minutes but the staff are friendly and it gives you time to take in the surroundings.
The room - we were told on check in we had been upgraded although I'm sure they tell this to everryone. We had booked a standard deluxe room and were told we'd been upgraded to a luxury room. Its hard to see where the upgrade was as we had no balcony, no ocean view, no alcohol in the room (which I was led to believe all rooms had). Inspite of this minor gripe, the room was spacious, clean and the a/c worked a dream.
The Restaurants - a quick summary, The Bayside is good at breakfast and lunch for buffet food, the selection changed each day and the standard was good. Twinkle the cat lives under the bayside restuarant, please feed her if you get the chance. Barefoot By The Sea - not so great, both the food and the service were the worst on site, but it was still acceptable and the setting is beautiful. Kimono's - food is better than average but its the atmosphere that makes this great. You are seated in groups of 8 and its a great way to meet people, the chef who cooks at your table will liven the evening up with their singing - we had Wayne one night and Jermaine another, both were excellent. The Sundowner - some excellent dishes served here and the service was good. The 4C's - you may be made to wait to get in but the food is good here. Italian dishes are made to order and its the only place you can get large portions - excellent service here from Gawayne. Beach Grill - average burgers, hotdogs etc.
Some good advice is to head to the piano bar at night and let Daron and Donovan look after you, these guys rock and can make you cocktails all night long. There's usually live music there, look out for Moses - that dude can sing!
The beach is beautiful but is a little on the small side. A big gripe is the limited loungers with parasols and the limited lilo/floats. With the heat there you can't spend too much time in the sun so more parasols would be good. The floats were also in limited supply and the butlers would often take these first for the guests with butler services. Another annoyance was the guests who would take these back to their rooms overnight depriving other people of the chance to use them.
The pools - two are a little on the small side but the main pool is lively and the playmakers will ensure that there is always something going on.
Sandals has a no tipping policy but you must remember that most of the staff there will work for $100 per week which doesn't go a long way in Jamaica. They will be sacked if caught accepting tips so please, if you get excellent service - Tip, but do it 'under the table'.
Also, the staff work hard and deserve to be treated with respect. On a number of occasions we witnessed people with too high an opinion of themselves talking down to the staff, waving money in their faces and completely forgetting simple manners such as please and thank you. You wouldn't like anyone talking to you like that, so don't do it! When you're polite to the staff they will warm to you and take better care of you.
Sandals are also prone to cold selling to you and a lot of their services are ridiculously over priced - to get 20 pictures that their photographers take of you put onto a cd with 1 print will set you back well over $200. Also be prepared to be invited to the Spa at least once a day,and room service will be delivered with an offer to buy a private candle lit dinner...
A word of caution regarding the tours - Negril is a fair distance from most of these so choose with care. We opted to do Dunns River falls and it took 3.5 hours to get there.... Ricks Cafe is close and is good fun, the Appleton Combo Tour will give you three destinations in one day and is good value.
In summary, the resort is beautiful and the staff are excellent. They really look after the place and the grounds are immaculate. I wouldn't rate it as a 5 star resort though as the food is not gourmet and the rooms are not quite up to standard unless you spend the big bucks for a loft or river suite.
Bearing in mind this is a beach resort though and not a hotel, you can't realistically expect 5 stars.
We had a great time, you really can't get stressed there as everything is taken care of. You'll meet great people, have great service and will mostly likely get burned by the guaranteed sunshine.
On a final note - the drinks are NOT watered down as some people claim.
