“Great Vacation”

Couples Negril

Aug 12, 2008

My girlfriend and I vacationed at Couples Negril from August 4 through August 9. It was a terrific and relaxing vacation for the both of us.

The ride from MoBay Airport to the Couples resort is approx. 90 minutes. Our driver actually told jokes and gave us a little history of the surrounding countryside.

Upon arrival at Couples, we were greeted with warm towels and champagne. We checked in and our rooms were ready within minutes.

We stayed in Room 2308. It was very nice - king size bed, comfortable mattress, plush pillows, flat-screen TV mounted on the wall, and mini-bar fridge stocked with water, beer, and soda. We both got a kick that the bottled water brand name is called "Wata" :)

As an all-inclusive resort, Couples is among the best in the world. The beach is simply awesome. The sand is clean and white, with no rocks to hurt your feet. The water is clean, green, warm, and calm with no waves that knock you over, because you're on the bay.

There is plenty of room on the beach. You never feel crowded. The lounge chair cushion also doubles as a flotation device in the water. One thing to keep in mind is that there are jelly-fish in the bay. My girlfriend got stung by a jelly-fish, and so did a few others. We went to the nurse and were informed that they are not poisonous. The nurse put cortisone cream on the wound. To be honest, I was not at all aware that there would be any jelly-fish, but obviously there are.

The pool is awesome - nice size with jacuzzis on both ends. There is a swim-up pool bar too.

The service was very good. The Jamaican people are very friendly in general. The drinks at the bars are awesome. My favorite drink was the "Dirty Banana" - so yummy! There ar four bars - one at the beach grill, one at the main restaurant, one at the pool, and one at the piano bar (open in the evening). The liquor is good quality and they make pretty much anything you want.

The food was excellent. There are four restaurants to eat at. The breakfast buffet at the "Cassava Terrace" was delicious - especially the made-to-order omelette station, fresh fruits, and wide-assortment of pastries. Lunch was best at the beach grill, called "Heliconia Grill", where they have jerk chicken, burgers, pizza, salads, nachos, and cookies. Dinner was best at the fine-dining restaurant, "Otaheite", and the Asian restaurant, "Lychee". You have to make reservations for Otaheite and dress more formally (no sneakers, sandals, shorts, t-shirts, etc. Unless you are on your honeymoon, they will probably seat you with several other couples at a table, which is actually pretty cool because you get to meet new people. Lychee was also very good. They play Asian techno music in the background. Friday night is lobster night at all the restaurants.

We didn't do much of the optional water activities, such as the catamaran cruise or the glass-bottom boat tour. We were more content with just chilling on the beach and by the pool. We did go on the optional shopping trip into town and got some nice souveniers to bring back home.

Overall, this was an excellent vacation and I highly recommend Couples Negril. "Yeah mon - no worries - everything is IRIE (good) :)

Our trip to Jamaica included the following: Negril - The Caves (the best place I've ever been), Couples, and Tensing Pen. Montego Bay - Sandals Inn.

We started at The Caves, which really is a disservice to all places after, because nothing can compare. The Caves is truly the best place we've ever stayed. After we left there, we went to Couples. Once the initial shock of the sheer number of people there, and the size of the property (very large) wore off, we were content enough there. The service is good. The food and drink are plenty. There are tons of activities, and they have a very energetic activity staff. The pool was always nice and clean, and the beach was the cleanest on that stretch (we walked all the way down to Sandals, and the Couples beach area was by far the cleanest.)

Now, this isn't exactly what we had in mind; we're more small scale, "boutique" hotel type people. We look for quiet places with excellent food, drink, and service. But, if you are in the market for lots of arranged activities, the ability to meet lots of people, lots of food and drink available at all hours, this is definitely the place, and you won't be disappointed. The rooms have a/c, the bathrooms are okay (not superior, but not bad), the bed was pretty comfy (but had a huge lump in the middle), room service was good (definitely get the pastry basket - I haven't had such good croissants since I was in London). We ate at the Thai restaurant and the food was superb.

The beach was great - clean, the water was clear and warm. The grounds are very nice - you feel very safe and secure. One hint, if you want to do a shopping trip across the street to the craft market, go with the group! (And I'm not a group person...) Because, if you're there without a group, you're like a little fish thrown out to a sea of hungry fish. I think prices will be more reasonable and you won't be dragged into every booth if you're with a larger group of people.

The staff are not supposed to take tips, but we just are not able to NOT tip people for providing us with service. So, tips were discretely given and not turned away. The staff seemed happy at work, and were always helpful and polite, and lots of them were fun, too.

I would recommend this resort to people who want what it has to offer - I don't think anyone would be disappointed in anything here.

My wife and I just returned last week and had a GREAT time on our trip to Couples Negril and the weather was awesome. A few brief rain showers in the afternoon and we enjoyed them. Majority of the time 90+ degrees and a slight wind. Perfect beach weather!

I was a little hesitant flying with American Airlines with all of their cutbacks, but everything was fine. A couple of slight delays but that was only because of the thunderstorms in Miami. When we arrived in Montego Bay it only took about 30 minutes to get through customs and we were directed to the Couples Lounge; Rum punch, Red Stripe and anything else you wanted! We only had time to drink one drink and the shuttle was ready to leave.

The driver was excellent and it was not like anything I had read on the message board. He was extremely safe and cautious and got us to the resort in about 1.5 hours.

Once we arrived we were greeted with Champagne and given our room keys. One of the staff immediately asked us to identify our bags so he could carry them and escort us to our room. Our room was in building 9 on the 3rd floor. The garden room was larger than expected and they had added a stocked fridge, flat screen TV (not that we watched any TV), a CD player, and a wonderful balcony with 2 chairs and a table. It overlooked a Koi pond and was an absolutely beautiful view. The service was awesome and the room was kept very clean. The turndown service was nice as well. Every staff member had the same response to ANY request..."No problem!" My wife and I have never been treated so well on vacation!

The restaurants were excellent as well. The Cassava Terrace had a wonderful breakfast buffet, great choices at lunch and the dinners were better than most. The Heleconia Grill was great for a quick bite and always had fresh fruit. The jerk burger was awesome! The Otaheite was a great experience and the food was beyond our expectations...something we would pay $60-90 per person in Las Vegas. I had the Beef tenderloin with garlic mashed potatoes and my wife had the shrimp, scallop and crab kabobs. Our favorite restaurant was the Lychee and Leroy was the best of all of the staff! We ate there two different nights and the food was to die for!

The pool was cleaned daily and we spent quite a bit of time at the pool bar in the late afternoon. The bartenders were very entertaining and everything was, "no problem, mon"

The beach...ah the beach... The most beautiful white sugar sand and was raked daily. There was absolutely no litter on the entire stretch of beach. The best part about the beach was the floats on the lounges that you could take out into the water as well as the re-flag service. Never had to wait more than a couple of minutes. There were vendors set up on the different days and many of our gifts were purchased there. we were only approached a couple of times by people asking if we smoked the Ganja...we told them no thank you and they returned with, "Respect, mon", told us to enjoy our stay and went about their business. Not uncomfortable at all. We never felt unsafe...in fact that was the furthest from our mind. We would leave our beach bag, camera and our clothes on the lounge chairs to eat, walk the beach, or shop and never was it disturbed! We enjoyed the snorkeling, catamaran cruise, HobieCat sailing, and waterskiing! We also participated in the fashion show and received a 15% discount on any of the clothes we wore. What a fun time! We met a lot of wonderful people from all over the world and made some new friends.

We now know why people rave about all-inclusive vacations and this resort is top-notch, from the service the staff provide, to the quality of the food, and the top-shelf liquor! We are definitely looking forward to returning, hopefully next year. This was, by far, he most relaxing and enjoyable vacation we have ever been on!

I was truly amazed when I stepped off the shuttle into the resort lobby. The view of the pool and ocean was breathtaking. I was a little weary coming at first but I couldnt have stayed at a better friendlier place. The only downfall was the plumbing was not so good. Our first nite the toilet backed up and the shower pressure was well ..there wasnt much. But other then that it was worth the money and I would love to go back. Our waiter Leroy at the Lynchee was great! I would recommend this place to any couples who want to just get away and relax.

My husband and I stayed here for a week and didn't want to leave. We had an amazing time! We got there pretty early in the morning and thought it would take awhile to get into our room. So we went and explored the resort and had breakfast came back and our room was ready. The resort is nice and you get a lot for what you pay for. People wrote about that they should have stayed at the Riu next door. We walked by it and it had kids running around everywhere and it's very loud over there during the day. Couples is a more intimate and relaxing place. I wouldn't have stayed anywhere else.

Rooms: We stayed in the ocean view room and it suited us just fine. We had a great view of the pond and ocean. It had a bar and mixers. We didn't really use the mini bar though because we were rarely in the room. But we did utilize the bars through the resort.

Food: I have to admit I was a little skeptical about all inclusive resort food, but the food here was very good. Make reservation at Otaheite for a table for 2. The food there was really good and the service was outstanding. We also really liked Lychee and Heliconia. We had Denver for our waiter at Lychee and he was great.

Activities: Before we got to Couples we planned on doing some diving but had no idea that we would be going 2 to 3 times a day. We have to say this was the absolute highlight to our trip. Richard, Craig, Alain, Suga, and Brian really did make our trip even more amazing. Those guys are the BEST!! We will definitely return because of them. We had so much fun and saw so much. The water was so warm. We paid extra for the night dive (well worth it too) and got our advance open water while we were there with Suga. I really can't say enough about the dive crew. It's great that the diving is included in the price because diving can be quite costly. We really miss it and the guys! Also the catamaran was really fun I would highly recommend it. It was pretty funny watching the people slide down the slide into the ocean. It's definitely a booze cruise. And they take you to Pirates Cave and you can swim in there which was really fun too. We did the shopping excursion too which we liked as well.

Beach: The beach was very nice and never seemed crowded. We would get a hammock and a red flag for drinks and relaxed. The beach bar was nice and the drinks were really good. And it was so nice floating in the ocean.

So yes our trip here was absolutely amazing. My husband and I travel quite a bit through the year and try to go to different spots. We actually stayed at another resort for the second half of our trip. And we would stay in the same 2 spots again every time we go to Jamaica. We already want to go back. The staff was so nice that when we went to the other resort that resort didn't have the transportation included and Couples said that we can just come back there and they would take us. I thought that was really nice. Again I have to say that the dive crew is the #1 reason out of a lot of reasons that we will be returning to Couples Negril
