Going back to look at reviews again before writing this, I saw some that would have deterred me from staying at Hostal Martin (somehow I didn't see those before our trip). My initial impressions of Hostal Martin during booking were very good. They were extremely responsive on email and we had several communications before our departure. We chose the hostal... more

After spending a lovely week in a quiet apartment unit on a tree-lined street in Madrid, we (a family of three) went to the coastal areas. Our return flight to our home detination was from Madrid, very early in the morning. So, before leaving Madrid, attracted by its central location, we went to Hostal Martin -- to get a basic... more

probably the worst hostel I've been to during the last year. The room was dark, grimy and with gargling water pipes as background tracking. The 'ensuite' bathroom may sound grand until you've been there that is. There was an underlying odour that was impossible to shake off and is still in my nostrils writing this review so I think I'll... more

Generally fair value for €57 for smallish, plain but very clean and recently refurbished double room. Great location - close to metro, many attractions, restaurants and a very good breakfast cafe about 5 doors down Calle Atocha. We were able to switch after one night from an extremely tiny double room in Hostal Cervelo (same operators, on 1st floor where... more

Be warned this property is not safe. I was mugged by 3 individuals entering the building 2 weeks ago. They do not have any security cameras out front or in the lobby. When the person on duty finally came down after I screamed he would not call the police or allow me to use a phone to call home. I... more

I stayed there (be careful, Hostal Martin and Hostal Cervelo have both the same reception) with my friend during a weekend trip and I was pleasantly surprised, the rooms were clean (and everything got cleaned and tidied up on a daily basis) and the shower pressure was great for a hostal. The receptionist had some troubles understanding my Spanish but... more

Entrance was not very appealing, but the hostel itself was quite nice given the price. Rooms were very clean and quiet and the water pressure was great. The bakery next door, called Peter Pan, was outstanding. Hostel is about 1 block from nearest metro station. Staff was friendly and helpful. Location was central for sightseeing. Free internet access through a... more

We booked at the Hostal Martin but ended up staying at one of their sister sites just up C/Atocha on Luis Velez. Stayed 4 nights. Very clean, comfortable, ensuite rooms, with balcony over the main street. TV, air con, great bathrooms: the rooms look like they've been recently renovated and were priced 46 euro per night, which is a great... more

I am not a princess, but I do expect cleanliness and a friendly staff. Finding the hostal building was easy, a few blocks from the metro but the office situation was a bit of a mess. The hostal shares an office with another hostal and the staff was not all that friendly, although they spoke English a little. I requested... more
