This hike isn't for the faint of heart. The first part of the Kalalau Trail is all uphill and covered with dense tree roots. The rest of the trail is extremely rocky and covered in mud. There is very little flat land. For some reason I chose to wear teva-style sandals. Big mistake! My feet were covered with cuts in... more

My wife and I have hiked the Kalalau trail 4 times to the end. Most recently in January 2007. We are not super athletic people, at the time of writing this we are in our mid-40's. Three of the hikes we have stayed overnight and hiked out the next day. I don't recommend this as it is very tiring. Our... more

We hiked the first two miles of the Kalalau trail on August 11, and this was one of the highlights of our trip. We arrived early and got a parking spot near the trailhead. We had hiking poles with us, but at the last second decided to leave them in the condo and wished we had brought them with us.... more

We started this hike planning to only go to the beach, but included the two miles to the falls. It was a beautiful day and we truly enjoyed the views and wonderful sites. The water is indescribably blue…just amazing. The hike is strenuous; I would suggest doing this hike after you have done a few other smaller hikes in Kauai.... more

We just went on the Kalalau trail yesterday, and boy, what a work out!! The info that I have read on the trial says that it is a strenuos hike, It was tough, however doable. I am a very inexperieced hiker so it took us about 2 hrs to reach the beach, and another 2 hrs to get back. For... more

I am not a hiker, I'm in my 30's, physically fit, and I brought my 2 teenage sons and my 8 year old niece. They all did better than I did on the hike. There is a lot of uphill walking. It is not a severe hike, but with the summer heat and humidity it can be strenuous. We brought... more

Our family just attempted the firs two miles of the Kalalau Trail. As noted elsewhere, the hike is not strenuous, but we turned back after about twenty minutes at a point several hundered feet up where the trail narrowed to about 5 or 6 feet wide with a sheer drop off. Hadn't seen that noted in other reviews. The views... more

My husband, mother and I decided to do the first couple of miles of this trail after reading all the must do's for this island. We started out at 8 am and glad we did it early. It was a more than I expected and lots of times my mother and I had to stop and rest. When we got... more

My husband and I hiked the Kalalau trail this past Oct. It was wonderful. We hiked in to the first beach which is 2 miles in and 2 miles out. It took us 3 hours round trip. It was a bit challenging even though we consider ourselves in pretty good shape. It was very muddy and wet on many parts... more

My husband, son, and I hiked the Kalalau trail some years back. At that time, I was a 45-year old woman in reasonably good but not great shape. I had been utterly fascinated with doing this hike since first hearing about it and hiking the first mile up to the view of Kee Beach on a previous visit. We had... more
